Μαλλιοπούλειον

Our History

In 1917 it was founded by inhabitants of Kypseli area on the initiative of Dimitrios K. Malliopoulos, the charitable association under the name “Charitable Foundation of Kypseli” with the initial purpose of erecting and finishing the Holy Church of St. George Kipselis. In 1917, on a plot of land purchased by the “Charitable Foundation of Kypseli”, the temple of St.George was founded in the circular square, which later took the name of the temple, which is enclosed by the streets of Eptanisos, Ithaca, Hydra and Antiparos. In 1930, the church was completed and was inaugurated on December 11, 1932 by Archbishop of Athens, Chrysostomos Papadopoulos.

In 1934, a kindergarten (nursery) was established to provide day care to infants and toddlers who are devoid of maternity care or working to meet the needs of life and belong to poor or poor families, especially after the Asia Minor Catastrophe and World War II.

In 1936, after the death of Dimitrios K. Malliopoulos, the kindergarten (nursery) was renamed “Malliopouleion”. The nursery was based on its operation in private contributions, donor donations, social events and other donations in kind.

In 1968 the nursery station is transferred to a building site of the Foundation on 7-9 Aliveriou street in Kypseli. The award-winning Academy of Athens nursery operated until 2008, when the law changes and the building is divested of the licensing requirements. As a result, the institution’s movable property, which was invested in bank shares due to its diminution in value, shrank considerably.

In 2015 he was appointed Chairman of the Board Foundation, I.Perrotis. Desiring to broaden the work of the Foundation, it develops an active resource-finding policy through the Bodossakis Foundation’s Giving for Greece program, which acts as an interface between donors and those in need. Thus in the summer of 2016 he signs a memorandum of cooperation with the NGO Praksis, which undertakes the operation of the hostel of unaccompanied minors with the support of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and EU funding.

The Malliopouleion Foundation has granted immovable property to meet the needs of children, who today lack the family comfort because of the ever-increasing refugee crisis and the stay-encroachment in our country. So, with the support of the Bodossaki Foundation, Praksis, Atria Property Services (CBRE), the Architect Dimitris Sgoutas, the engineering firm TEKEM, Prokopis Linardos, the engineers Manolis Padouvas and Costas Athanasopoulos have worked unselfishly on the task. Work was completed in 2016 and from the beginning of 2017 the shelter started operating and accommodates 30 unaccompanied minors boys.

The result of the group effort was crowned with complete success and which gives us the strength to take on new initiatives in the future as Charitable Foundation.

The Foundation enables citizens, companies and other institutions to become donors or donors of initiatives and actions that will help solve social problems such as the hosting of unaccompanied minors boys.
